23 Dec Holiday Safety Tips
Holidays are joyful times we spend with family, friends, and in our local communities. Unfortunately, the holiday season is also a time when the number of thefts, burglaries, and robberies increase. At Coolidge Law in Gilbert Arizona, we wish you a safe Merry Christmas, one reason we’re writing a blog post to remind you to think ahead when you’re out and about in the community. During the busyness of the season, avoid becoming a target by taking a few precautions.
Vehicle Safety
When driving, parking, or getting in and out of your car, here are a few tips to steer clear of dangerous situations, thanks to the LA Police Department:
- Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location.
- Avoid driving alone or at night.
- Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.
- Be sure to locate your keys prior to walking to your car.
- Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area.
- Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car, which creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
- Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in your car, as well as when you leave your car.
- Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door.
- Never drink and drive.
Being safe is being aware of your immediate surroundings, as well as canvasing the general environment nearby.
Safety When Shopping
Keep these tips in mind while doing your shopping:
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep the cash you have in your front pocket.
- Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, con-artists may try various methods of distracting you, with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
- Dress casually and comfortably, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
- If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet.
- If your credit card is lost, stolen, or misused, notify the credit card issuer immediately.
- When possible, pay for purchases with a check or credit card instead of cash.
- Stay alert to your surroundings.
- Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
