Last week we outlined a few key common legal terms. Here are some additional definitions that may prove to be useful if you are facing criminal charges. Adjudicate – To give a judgment or a decree or make a final decision.

Execution – A legal remedy used to execute a judgment, by which a police officer may confiscate property of the debtor. This term also refers to the process of serving a civil arrest warrant.

Appellant – The party or person appealing the decision or judgment of a court.

Garnishment – A legal remedy whereby a debtor’s property or money in the possession or under the control of a third person (garnishee) is withheld from the debtor and applied to the debt.

Guardian – A person appointed by the court to manage the affairs an incapacitated person or child.

Incorrigible – Refers to a juvenile who is unmanageable by guardians or parents.  Incorrigible offenses include truancy and running away.

Jurisdiction – The authority or power of the court to act. The court must have jurisdiction over the geographic area, subject matter of the proceeding and the people against whom relief is sought.
